Cooking with a neighbour: kitchen favours

Learning from a neighbour how a proper Spanish omelette is made, baking a birthday cake together or lending a hand in the kitchen before a meal with guests: cooking can be shared too. On Mutioo you ask for or offer help in the kitchen between neighbours, for money or in exchange for another favour. It isn’t a meal service and it isn’t about selling food: these are one-off favours between private individuals, always with the person asking present.

Examples of this kind of favour

  • A neighbour teaching you a recipe step by step, in your kitchen or theirs.
  • Baking a cake or some biscuits together, learning how to work the dough.
  • Lending a hand in the kitchen before a meal with guests, with the host there.
  • Learning to make bread, fresh pasta or empanada dough.
  • Practising a recipe from another country with someone who cooks it often.

How to ask

Say what you want to learn or what you need help with, how many of you will be cooking and whether there are allergies, intolerances or diets. Make clear who provides the ingredients and where the cooking happens: at your home or at the neighbour’s, always with the person asking present. If you want to learn a recipe, say which one and what you can already cook.

  1. Post the favour

Pick the category, say what you need, where and when, and whether you’re offering money or a favour in return.

  2. Choose your neighbour

Neighbours in your area offer to help. You look at their profile and reviews, talk in the chat and choose.

  3. Done, and then it’s paid

The money waits, held safely, until you confirm the favour is done; if you don’t reply within 7 days, it’s released automatically. If you open an issue, it isn’t released.

What to agree on

  • Who buys the ingredients and how that cost is shared.
  • Allergies, intolerances and preferences: they’re stated in writing before starting.
  • Where the cooking happens, that the person asking is present throughout the favour and who tidies the kitchen afterwards.
  • That this isn’t about selling food: regular activity of that kind has its own health and tax rules.

What to offer

A rough example: an afternoon of help in the kitchen or teaching a recipe might come to between €10 and €20, not counting the ingredients. Each neighbour decides what to ask.

This is only a rough example to get the conversation started: each neighbour decides, it’s not a Mutioo rate or a market price, and you two set it. Mutioo Protection is paid by whoever asks: at most 10% of the price (€0.79 on small favours), and less on favours over €25. You see the exact amount before paying. Whoever helps pays no fee: they receive 100% of the price.

Mutioo is an intermediary: it puts neighbours in touch, but it doesn’t do the favours or vouch for anyone’s conduct. The agreement is between whoever asks and whoever helps.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a meal or catering service?

No. It’s help in the kitchen between neighbours, with the person asking present: teaching a recipe or lending a hand. Mutioo isn’t meant for selling or ordering food, or for providing services on a regular basis.

What if I have allergies?

Write them in the favour and repeat them in the chat; a neighbour can turn the favour down if they don’t feel confident. Mutioo doesn’t check anyone’s skills or kitchen hygiene.

Can I pay with another recipe, or another favour?

Yes. When you post you can offer a favour in return: a cake for an English lesson, for example.
